How Meat Raffles Work

Though the history of meat raffles isn't meticulously documented, most agree that they began in the U.K. before becoming popular in the United States. Meat raffles are conducted in “rounds.” Before each round begins, ticket sellers will walk around selling tickets (typically $2 or $3 each). Tickets have three numbers listed on them, meaning that if the meat raffle wheel lands on either of those numbers, you win meat for that spin. Multiple people can have the same number, meaning there could be more than one winner per spin! As each round begins, the operator announces the number of spins of the wheel for that round. It could vary from one spin or as many as five per round, which increases your chances of winning meat with the same ticket! There are other types of meat raffles as well. One other more common type is one that is operated like a Chinese or silent auction. In this type of raffle, participants purchase tickets that are then placed in buckets that represent different types of meats or meat packages. A winner is then drawn at random from each bucket.

Popularity

The meat raffle wheel  became more than just an opportunity to bring home some bacon. It quickly transformed into an event that brought communities together. Meat raffles gather families and friends for drinks, conversation, and prizes. They also are used to raise funds for schools and other charitable organizations. The meats available at these raffles vary widely. Some meat raffles try to coordinate their meat options based on the season. Spring and summer bring grill able cuts like burgers, hot dogs, etc. While fall raffles feature heartier items like turkey and ham. The raffles will often plan for the holidays, which allows lower-income families to win big cuts of meat they might not otherwise be able to afford.
